We Have No One to Blame But Ourselves

From: Chuck Baldwin (via email from Reese Yandle of the SCACS)

Somewhere down the line conservatives were sold a bill of goods. We have been told repeatedly that we shouldn't vote our conscience and support the principled candidate. Why? Because the principled candidate can't win. Pragmatism is the name of the game today. We must surrender our convictions and support the lesser of two evils. To do anything else is stupid. So we are told.

This erroneous philosophy has resulted in America's light on the hill becoming little more than a flicker. With Republicans in control of Congress for the past six years, spending of the federal government has increased more than F.D.R.'s New Deal and Lyndon Johnson's Great Society! Democrats must be green with envy to see the way Republicans can increase the size and scope of the federal government and still retain the support of conservatives. On second thought, liberals don't get jealous -they join the party!

The line of demarcation has become so blurred that it is very difficult to tell the difference between the two major parties today. The two front runners, Bush and Gore, share enough common ground they could give each other's speeches. Yet, conservatives throughout the nation are convinced they cannot support principled candidates.

The fact is it is not our job to win! That is God's responsibility. Our job is to be faithful to the truth. To win with an unprincipled candidate, regardless of party affiliation, is to cause truth to lose. No political party has a monopoly on truth! The transcendent, universal principles upon which this great nation was built have no party affiliation. They are "self evident" truths given by God. And, in case you haven't noticed, God is neither Republican nor Democrat.

The result of this egotism is that solid, principled conservatives are left out to dry. Men like Gary Bauer, Alan Keyes and Steve Forbes might as well be running for the presidency of Russia. They are given the leftover morsels from the Republican table while the establishment, New World Order candidates feast on steak and shrimp.

How is that we can claim to support the transcendent truths laid down in the Declaration and Constitution on the one hand and turn around and support candidates that we know will compromise those truths on the other hand? How dare we pay homage to the memory of those great Americans of yesteryear who stood for principle at the sacrifice of their lives and fortunes and then turn around and in the name of pragmatism surrender those very same principles?

In the final analysis, when all is said and done, we have no one to blame but ourselves!
